research

As a researcher, I have sought to understand the range of socioeconomic, social context, and public policy factors that impact health and well-being. This goal has been born out of over a decade of clinical, academic, research, and volunteer service experiences aimed at the improving the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. At all ecological levels of my professional experience (i.e., individual- and family-level clinical work, meso-level school or community work, and macro-level research or public policy work), the association between low socioeconomic status (SES) and reduced health and well-being for individuals, families, and communities has been undeniably clear. After years of micro- and meso-level work, I sought advanced academic training with the express purpose of expanding the potential reach of my practice.

As a master's student, I examined associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and later life mental and physical health among low-income women. As a doctoral student, I examined links between socioeconomic factors and broad longitudinal trends in substance using behaviors that develop over the life course to help shape individual health.
As a postdoc, I began adopting a more fine-grained approach to identify and understand the lived experience mechanisms that degrade health for low-SES individuals. Recent advances with mobile health (mHealth) technology, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data, and statistical methods now allow us to ask specific, targeted questions about the lived experience mechanisms associated with reduced health and well-being among low-SES populations.
